Greetings Readers!
I've been a bookworm since I was ten years old. I remember reading more than 15 books in a year. I recall enjoying Geronimo Stilton, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and other popular books at the time, but when I hit 11, I suddenly quit reading, and I have been a failed reader until grade 8.
I'm not very proud of it, but I decided to take a leap and picked up a book, and slowly after building this valuable habit of reading, I found myself sitting stationary reading for two hours straight, and I've been reading as much as I can since then, not only books but blog posts, essays, newspaper columns, and so on. So, in this post, I'll discuss how you can get the most out of your reading and make it more efficient.
If exercised correctly and precisely, reading can improve the way you present and articulate yourself in front of an audience or a bunch of people. It does not directly have an adverse effect on your spoken English, but it definitely improves your vocabulary and increases your knowledge.
The Crawl Method:
When we read, our brains have the tendency to run through the pages, paragraphs, and sentences, and we don't really give attention to details and small tidbits such as punctuation, grammar, and wordplay. Reading slower than your normal speed while paying attention and noticing the subtle aspects of the writing can really benefit the way you learn. The more attention your brain pays to a given stimulus, the more elaborately the information will be encoded, learned, and retained.
Discover Your Level:
Always start with content to read that is of your level and that is easy to consume. It can be an article on Medium or your local newspaper. Anything works. Read topics that interest you. They can vary from crime to autobiographies. The bottom line is that if the language used is hard to understand or the topic isn't something you like, then you are more likely to give up.
Reading Omits Those Awkward Pauses While Speaking:
Do you find yourself searching and scouring your brain for good words to use while speaking? Well, the simple answer to that, my friend, is to read. Fictional stories, especially the ones with an abundance of dialogues between characters, give an insight into a more first-person dialogue. Once you mark the words whose meanings you aren't sure of, use a dictionary to find the meaning. Once you do that, try solidifying the meaning in your brain by forming a sentence on the spot. After that, read the line in which the word was used to further fit the word into your subconscious mind. People tend to understand passive vocabulary while reading but rarely use it while speaking or reading. Try adopting words that can be shifted from your passive to active vocabulary.
Engage And Inflate Your Knowledge Balloon:
As mentioned before, books often have timeless and valuable lessons. Reading them slowly and critically helps in discovering the topic deeply. When you read critically, start with an open mind but end up questioning what you've learned. Ask questions, highlight crucial points, take notes, underline essential concepts, and think about each concept the author is attempting to describe in greater depth. To think more deeply and critically about your new information, engage with it in a different way. Because you are reading to comprehend, critical reading is necessary, and you can't truly comprehend a topic until you ask questions, raise objections, analyze the data, and seriously think about it. According to Descartes, "The reading of all good books is like a conversation with the finest men of the past centuries." Reading will not only provide you with knowledge in a variety of fields that will be useful in striking and maintaining conversations on a wide range of topics, but it will also expose you to new ideas, lessons, and best practices that will be beneficial to you both personally and professionally.
Low On Motivation? Still Read:
Ever felt like you don't have the motivation to read one day? In my personal opinion, motivation is something that shouldn't define your work quality or enthusiasm; it is the drive that should. Read every day, even if it is just 10 pages a day or 5 minutes a day, Establish it as a habit. Reading is something that utilizes a very small amount of energy. Hence, block your time according to your energy levels and read when you feel like you are low on energy.
That's it for today's post folks! What are you waiting for? Pick up that book and keep these tips in your mind to get the most out of this heap of knowledge! This post was written on 09/05/22. Please do share feedback and mail me personally about your experience after using these techniques! Stay tuned for more, and show some love by spreading the word about it! Thanks, Rhythm Doshi
